Biography

Beau Maes is a junior associate in Baker McKenzie's EU Competition & Regulatory Affairs Practice Group at the Brussels office. He joined the Firm in February 2022.

Prior to joining Baker McKenzie, he worked as a summer intern in various departments, including corporate, commercial and ICT law. He was also an intern at DG COMP Unit C.5, where he focused on reviewing "information, communications and media" mergers. He also interned at the Australian Embassy in Belgium and Luxembourg, Mission to the European Union, and NATO.

Practice Focus

Beau has a broad knowledge of EU competition law, with a focus on engaging with competition authorities in the context of individual investigations and market studies. He has developed in-depth experience in EU merger procedures, market definition analysis, abuse of dominance compliance, vertical advisory and overall compliance workstreams within the business.

In addition to his expertise in EU competition law, Beau has been advising clients on Belgian competition law. He has hands-on experience in helping clients navigate the full notification process and communicating with the Belgian Competition Authority.

Beau's sector experience primarily covers IT and media industries, such as cloud computing and video gaming. He has also worked in a variety of other sectors, including telecom, bioscience, automotive, banking and insurance.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Assisting a client active as a bioscience company for the food, nutritional, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries on a global basis with its merger notification.
  • Assisting two clients as third-party complainants in a video game industry-related acquisition with particular focus on the EU and UK investigation.
  • Advising a client on legal compliance, including Article 101 and 102 TFEU analysis, in relation to its cloud computing service and related services.
  • Assisting a client as third-party complainant in an acquisition related to virtualisation software and hardware components.
  • Assisting a client in an ongoing abuse of dominance investigation by the EU Commission in the VAT refund services sector.
  • Advising a client active in car rental services on compliance with the EU vertical framework.
  • Advising a client active in the medical devices and healthcare sector on compliance with the EU R&D Block Exemption Regulation.
  • Assisting a private equity firm with the Belgian notification of an acquisition of an insurance company.
  • Advising a client active in the methanol industry on a market definition assessment by competition authorities.
  • Advising a client in the energy sector on information exchange guidelines and assessing merger and FDI requirements.
  • Assisting a client in the chips sector with state aid support for investing in building a chips factory in Germany.
  • Assisting in drafting EU competition law guidelines for a company active in the pharmaceutical sector.
