Matthew is an Intellectual Property & Technology lawyer in Baker McKenzie's Toronto office.

Matthew helps businesses protect their brands, ideas, and technology efficiently through intellectual property prosecution and litigation, as well as effectively utilize their IP through regulatory compliance, licensing agreements, development agreements, and corporate transaction support.

Prior to joining the Firm, Matthew worked as a legal summer student with a large Canadian financial institution where he assisted on matters relating to emerging technologies, digital products, privacy compliance, and financial regulatory compliance. He completed his Ontario Articles of Clerkship and returned to a multinational law firm as an Intellectual Property associate where his practice focused on trademark and copyright law including prosecution, enforcement, and litigation.

Practice Focus

Matthew has a diverse practice which includes providing advice on intellectual property, technology, and privacy law. He regularly assists clients to protect their IP through brand clearance, IP prosecution and enforcement, and domain name disputes. He also provides IP support for commercial agreements, employment/independent contractor agreements, and corporate transactions. Matthew assists clients across various industries including technology, banking, pharmaceutical, entertainment, equipment rental, social media, and consumer goods and retail, advising on regulatory and privacy compliance, technology licenses, non-disclosure agreements, and joint development agreements.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Assisted in advising a large multinational bank in trademark negotiations involving multiple international consent agreements.
  • Assisted in a trademark opposition appeal before the Federal Court involving similar medical device names.
  • Assisted in drafting and negotiating a co-branding agreement between two large Canadian companies in the airline and finance industries.
  • Represented the holder of a large copyright portfolio of well-known aquatic imagery in multiple enforcement proceedings across North America.
  • Provided legal opinions on the technical requirements for smoke alarms across Canada.
  • Provided legal opinions on branding and advertising requirements for biodegradable paper plates across Canada.
  • Assisted various global financial institutions with trademark clearance, prosecution, and enforcement including advising on a large rebranding initiative.
  • Provided IP due diligence on transaction involving a Canadian multinational metal processor and distributor.
