Biography

Matthew is an Intellectual Property & Technology lawyer in Baker McKenzie's Toronto office. He joined Baker McKenzie in 2022, after working at a large multinational firm where he also specialized in intellectual property and technology law. He received his JD from the University of Toronto.

Matthew helps businesses both protect and commercialize their brands, ideas, and technology. He has experience working with businesses to protect, manage, and enforce their intellectual property, including in the fields of trademark, copyright, patent, and trade secrets. He also works closely with businesses to ensure that their IP and technology is properly commercialized at all stages of development and use, by providing regulatory guidance in a number of fields, providing advice related to privacy law, and providing transactional support from an IP and privacy perspective.

Practice Focus

Matthew's practice focuses both on the protection of intellectual property, and the commercialization of technology. He assists with trademark, copyright, and patent prosecution, as well as providing IP advice in relation to licensing arrangements, commercial agreements, and corporate transactions. He also helps businesses navigate a wide range of regulatory and privacy issues relating to the commercialization of their technology, including assisting with all aspects of privacy compliance across Canada, assessing regulatory compliance in a number of industries, and drafting and reviewing commercial agreements related to technology.

  • Managed a financial regulatory review project assessing compliance requirements for a large multinational bank across several jurisdictions worldwide.

  • Advised in the acquisition of a Canadian gaming company by a large international gaming company.

  • Assisted in drafting and negotiating a co-branding agreement between two large Canadian companies in the airline and finance industries.

  • Assisted a large financial institution with trademark clearance, prosecution, and enforcement as part of a rebranding initiative.

  • Provided advice to several financial institutions regarding compliance with Canadian laws when utilizing cloud service providers.

  • Assisted with assessing reporting obligations in relation to data privacy breach impacting government data.
