Overview

China remains one of the world's most significant markets for investment, innovation and cross-border business.

For more than five decades, Baker McKenzie has helped multinational companies invest, operate and grow in China, while supporting Chinese businesses as they expand globally.

With offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, together with the Baker McKenzie FenXun Joint Operation, we offer one of the most established international legal platforms in China. Our teams advise on many of the market's most complex and high-value matters across mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, banking and finance, tax, employment, compliance and investigations, antitrust and competition, international trade, cybersecurity and data privacy, intellectual property, and dispute resolution.

Clients turn to us for commercially focused advice that combines deep understanding of China's legal and regulatory environment with the reach of a global network spanning more than 70 offices worldwide. Whether navigating market entry, managing regulatory change, executing strategic transactions or pursuing international growth, clients benefit from coordinated support across jurisdictions, industries and practice areas.

Recognized by leading international legal directories and publications, we have a strong track record advising on many of China's most significant capital markets and M&A transactions. Representative matters include Chery Automobile's HKD 9.145 billion Hong Kong IPO, Zhipu AI's Hong Kong listing (the world's first publicly listed large language model company), Chagee's USD 411 million Nasdaq IPO, China Pacific Insurance's HKD 15.5 billion zero-coupon convertible bond issuance, Tencent Music's acquisition of the entire equity of Himalaya Holdings, Global New Material International Ltd.'s acquisition of Merck's surface solutions business unit and Haier Smart Home's acquisition of Carrier's Commercial Refrigeration business. Many of these transactions have been recognized as Deals of the Year by ALB, China Business Law Journal and other leading legal directories.

Did You Know?

50+ Years in China
Baker McKenzie has been advising clients in China for more than five decades, making us one of the longest-established international law firms in the market.

License No. 001
Our Beijing office was established under Representative Office License No. 001 issued to an international law firm in China, reflecting our pioneering role in the development of China's legal services market.

China's First Joint Operation Office
In 2015, Baker McKenzie and FenXun established China's first approved joint operation between an international law firm and a PRC law firm, creating a unique platform for coordinated international and PRC legal services.

First in China, Fluent in Global - Over Decade Excellence

As China's first approved joint operation between an international law firm and a PRC law firm, Baker McKenzie FenXun Joint Operation combines Baker McKenzie's global platform with FenXun Partners' deep local capabilities to provide coordinated international and PRC legal services.

More than a decade on, the Joint Operation continues to support multinational companies and Chinese businesses on complex domestic and cross-border matters, delivering seamless legal support across jurisdictions.

Under Chinese regulations, our relationship with FenXun Partners is a joint operation, not a merger. Baker McKenzie and FenXun Partners remain structurally separate and function as independent law firms.

The Joint Operation Office has been named China Best Joint Operation Office of the Year at the Chambers Greater China Region Awards 2026. Notably, this award has only been presented twice to date, and we are proud to have been honored on both occasions.
