Janet K. Kim
Biography
Janet Kim advises on outbound trade issues that arise under US economic sanctions, export control laws, outbound investment restrictions, antiboycott regulations, outbound data security program requirements, anti-money laundering laws and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. She advises and represents clients at all stages of complex trade‑related matters, from shaping strategy and managing transaction risk to defending enforcement actions, helping companies both manage risk and identify opportunities in regulated markets. Janet is known for her problem‑solving mindset, her ability to engage effectively with regulators, and her skill in providing accessible advice to clients both familiar and unfamiliar with the complex and evolving laws in her areas of expertise. She has represented a wide range of companies in administrative proceedings before several US government agencies, including the US Department of the Treasury, the US Department of Commerce, the US Department of State, the US Department of Defense, the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
Janet has a particular interest in emerging trade issues, as multinationals change or revamp their tech stacks, leverage AI, expand their footprints into the cloud or seek to invest in areas of development or expansion that are on the frontier of geoeconomic and national security-driven legal developments. Drawing on three decades of experience, she focuses on practical guidance and its integration into business decision‑making, advising companies across nearly all industries, particularly non‑banking financial services, healthcare, technology and B2C companies.
Janet has been consistently recognized year after year in legal rankings, and clients have said she “is extremely thoughtful and articulate in her advice and always demonstrates a deep understanding of our specific business in her responses” (Chambers Global).
