Biography

Mark is a senior associate in the Pensions Department and has over two decade's experience as a pensions lawyer, having joined Baker McKenzie in 2000.

Mark is a member of the Association of Pension Lawyers and the Pension and Lifetime Savings Association Central London Group.

Practice Focus

Mark advises both companies and trustees on all aspects of UK pensions law in a variety of sectors on the legal aspects of operating pension plans. These include pension buyouts and liability management, scheme mergers, establishing and amending pension schemes, negotiating pension terms in corporate transactions and outsourcing contracts and resolving scheme members' complaints and Pensions Ombudsman disputes.

  • Advising a number of trustee boards and employers on buy-in and buy-out exercises.

  • Advising on the GBP 4.8 billion buy-in of the Boots Pension Scheme securing the benefits of 53,000 members, being the largest transaction of its kind to date.

  • Advising trustees on a leading innovative longevity reinsurance deal and a first-of-kind conversion to a buy-in.

  • Extensive scheme merger experience.

  • Corporate transactions, reorganisations and outsourcings.

  • Advising trustees and employers on the impact of tax simplification, discrimination laws and new legislation.

  • Ongoing advice to a number of large defined benefit and occupational defined contribution schemes.

  • Advising the Trustee of the Merchant Navy Officers Pension Fund on various de-risking and insurance transactions as part of its strategic journey planning.
