Biography

Luka trained and qualified at another major international law firm before joining Baker McKenzie in September 2009.

Practice Focus

Luka advises lenders, sponsors, borrowers and ECAs on a wide variety of international and emerging markets financing transactions and restructurings. He is primarily involved in cross-border Export and Project Finance, Structured Trade Finance, Syndicated Lending and Restructurings.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Acted for BNP Paribas, Societe Generale and Black Sea Trade and Development Bank in connection with a multi-sourced financing (including a SERV covered facility agreement) for the Istanbul Municipality for the construction of a waste to power facility.

  • Acted for a South African bank in relation to a trade finance facility for its Tanzanian manufacturer of food and maize products to refinance some of its existing facilities and general capex requirements.

  • Acted for UKEF and Standard Chartered Bank in relation to a c. EUR 270 million UKEF direct lending and a c. EUR 37 million commercial facility financing to the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Uganda for the construction of Kabaale airport. This deal was UKEF's largest ever loan to an African sovereign.

  • Acted for Standard Chartered Bank in connection with multiple Export Credit Agency covered financings (Hermes, EKF and Sinosure) and related tied commercial facilities to various large Bangladeshi corporate borrowers.

  • Acted for a global financial institution on a UK Export Finance supported USD 500 million financing for an emerging markets borrower.

  • Acted for a financial institution in connection with a Hermes and SACE covered dual tranche financing for a sub-sovereign borrower.

  • Acted for HSBC Bank plc on a USD 193.7 million financing for the Panamanian Bus Rapid Transport system in Panama City supported EKN.

  • Acted for HSBC and others on a USD 450 million Islamic financing for PT Natrindo Telepon Seluler (AXIS), the Indonesian mobile operator. The financing formed part of a combined USD 1.2 billion financing package, which also included two equipment facilities supported by EKN and Sinosure.

  • Acted for Standard Chartered Bank in relation to a USD 2 billion receivables backed credit facility for Sonangol.

  • Acted for African Export-Import Bank in relation to USD 200 million trade facility to Arab Contractors.
