Biography

Martin Furrer is a partner in Baker McKenzie’s Corporate & Transactions practice group in Zurich.

He is the former managing partner of Baker McKenzie Switzerland and a former member of the European Regional Council and the Policy Committee of Baker McKenzie International. Today, he serves on the Financial Committee of Baker McKenzie International. Before joining the Firm, Martin worked for McKinsey & Company as a strategy management consultant.

Practice Focus

Martin’s professional practice focuses on advising international clients on large real estate, M&A, and private equity, as well as corporate reorganizations and governance topics.

Martin is ranked among the leading lawyers in his areas of practice by various publications, including Legal 500 and Chambers Europe.

Martin currently serves as a member of the board of directors of a number of publicly listed and privately held companies. He also teaches the highly reputable legal module in Switzerland of the INSEAD Board executive education program (IN-BOARD), which offers a framework for board members to learn more about the increasingly difficult environment they face during their mandate.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Advised Pictet in their sale and lease back transaction of the iconic global headquarter building in the Acacias district of Geneva to Deka Immobilien for a record consideration.
  • Advised UBS AG on the sale and lease-back of a number of prime properties in Geneva with a transaction value of approximately CHF 300 million.
  • Advised Moevenpick Holding AG / Kingdom Holding in their sale of the worldwide Moevenpick hotel portfolio to Accor for a transaction value in excess of CHF 550 million.
  • Represented Investis Holding SA in its initial public offering and listing on the Standard for Real Estate Companies of SIX Swiss Exchange.
  • Advised Migros Pension Fund on the reorganization of its real estate portfolio, including the transfer of more than 500 properties with a value of approx. CHF 5.4 billion to a newly established investment foundation.
  • Advised Swiss Re on the reorganization of its real estate portfolio, including the transfer of more than 170 properties with a value in excess of CHF 3.5 billion to Swiss Re Investments AG.
  • Advised Credit Suisse in the sale of their operational headquarter “Uetlihof” to Norges for CHF 1 billion.
  • Advised the Pension Fund of F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG in the acquisition of a residential real estate portfolio including more than 600 properties for a transaction value in excess of CHF 600 million.
  • Advised a consortium on the acquisition of a real estate portfolio consisting of office and commercial properties throughout Switzerland with a value exceeding CHF 1.8 billion.
  • Advised as lead advisor PSP Swiss Property AG on the merger with REG Real Estate Group thereby forming the largest publicly listed real estate company in Switzerland at that time.
  • Advised leading publicly listed Swiss industrial company in various acquisitions in Europe.
  • Advised as lead advisor for countless Swiss real estate and industrial companies in sell-side and buy-side mergers and acquisitions, private equity and real estate transactions.
