Welcome to Baker & McKenzie in Kazakhstan

Baker & McKenzie brings a unique mix of global sophistication and local insight to clients in Kazakhstan and other CIS countries. Our strong Central Asia team has a deep understanding of local culture and business practices, and has represented various multinational corporations and financial institutions investing and operating in Central Asia.

We have extensive experience advising clients on a wide range of issues, including cross-border financings, M&A transactions, construction projects and trademark issues in the manufacturing, product sales and distribution, technology, natural resources, infrastructure, energy and finance sectors. We collaborate closely with our CIS and global counterparts to ensure that our technical expertise is cutting edge — especially in legal areas vital to our clients.

Baker & McKenzie is the only law firm that Kazakhstan’s president has selected as a member of his Foreign Investors Council. In that role, we co-chair the president’s Legal Working Group, which advises the president twice a year on legal issues important to the foreign investment community.

In a move to enhance its financial regulatory system, Kazakhstan has abolished two independent financial and securities regulatory bodies and consolidated their powers and functions under the National Bank of Kazakhstan.
Following disagreements regarding a proposal to extend the president’s term of office, Kazakhstan has amended its constitution to allow presidential elections to be held in April 2011 instead of December 2012.
Uzbekistan has adopted a law preparing the country for accession to the Apostille Convention. Signing the international treaty, which allows foreign public documents to be certified in signatory countries, is expected to benefit foreign investors entering Uzbekistan by saving them time and effort usually spent on legalizing documents.
