Biography

Ian Walden is a solicitor and of counsel to Baker McKenzie. He is professor of information and communications law and head of the Institute of Computer and Communications Law in the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary, University of London. Ian has been awarded a Council of Europe Human Rights Fellowship and seconded to the European Commission DG-Industry. He was previously a member of the executive board and trustee of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety, and a member of the Press Complaints Commission and the RUSI Independent Surveillance Review.

Practice Focus

Ian leads Queen Mary’s legal initiative and is a principal investigator on the Cloud Legal Project. He has been involved in law reform projects for the World Bank, European Commission, Council of Europe, Commonwealth, UNCTAD, ITU, UNECE and the EBRD, as well as numerous individual states.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Advising various major social media companies on various regulatory matters, including law enforcement obligations and relations.
  • Advising global software and services provider on its public policy response to various UK government proposals concerning standards and open source.
  • Advising a major cloud provider on the regulatory treatment of its services and acting for it when liaising with law enforcement agencies.
  • Acting for a major health product retailer on its European data protection compliance strategy and documentation.
  • Advising multinational consultancy companies on various matters, including its cloud contracting framework.
