Biography

Jo-Fan Yu is a Partner of Baker McKenzie based in Taipei and the member of Baker McKenzie IPTech Steering Committee, and Telecoms, Media, and Technology (TMT) groups. Having worked for Google as its Taiwan and Hong Kong policy head as well as local counsel for global internet companies for several years, Jo-Fan has vast experience in providing legal and policy advice to clients focusing on data protection, consumer protection, content regulation, antitrust, telco regulation, and IP-related issues. She also represents clients in various high profile investigations and litigations, including the first right to be forgotten case in Taiwan, data breach incidents, trade secret cases, online piracy cases, and antitrust investigations.

As a former senior prosecutor, Jo-Fan have extensive experience in handling high-profile litigations and criminal investigations. In addition, she represented several companies and senior executives on criminal security cases, insider trading, white-collar crime, and other high profile cases.

Jo-Fan also actively involves in public affairs. She regularly advises Taiwan National Development Council and Taipei City Government on personal data protection issues. She serves as Supervisor of AmCham Taiwan and Co-Chair of AmCham Taiwan Telecom & Media Committee, to promote sound legal and policy environment. She is also the non-governmental advisor (NGA) to International Competition Network (ICN) and served as supervisor of Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC) and Chairwoman in the IP and Innovation Technology Commission of Taipei Bar Association.

  • Acted as the local counsel of internet giants in relation to IP contracts, privacy issues, data protection, content regulation, antitrust and IP-related issues and represented clients in various investigations and litigations.
  • Advised social media companies in relation to online services in Taiwan.
  • Advised international entertainment companies for online film services in Taiwan.
  • Acted as local counsel of multinational game companies for years advising on online safe, consumer protection issues, and government regulatory issues.
  • Advised Taiwan telecom giant in relation to the use of users’ data.
  • Advised international retail companies in relation to its e-commerce business in Taiwan.

DISPUTE RESOLUTION

  • Acted as leading counsel for internet giants in various litigations, including intellectual infringement litigations, anti-competition investigations, consumer disputes, and data protection litigations. 
  • Acted as leading counsel for multinational and local companies in public safety criminal investigations and trials.
  • Acted as leading counsel for Taiwan IC design houses, manufacturing giants, and internet giants in trade secret litigations and anti-competition cases.
  • Acted as leading counsel and advised multinational IT companies in various IP infringement investigations.
  • Acted as leading counsel for a U.S.-based luxury commodity company in relation to criminal money laundering and tax investigations.
  • Acted for Taiwan and U.S.-based manufacturing companies in relation to various commercial disputes in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
  • Acted as leading counsel of Taiwan listed companies and their senior officers to file or defend in securities fraud crimes, insider trading, and white-collar crimes.
