Derek focuses his practice on dispute resolution, employment and labor, and intellectual property. He has extensive experience in representing local and multinational corporations in civil and criminal proceedings, negotiations with labor unions, management-labor mediations, and conducting investigations on multiple matters. Derek also has experience in advising clients on commercial legal issues, such as electronic commerce, IP protection, multilevel marketing regulations, pharmaceutical regulations, antitrust and labor law, among others.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Litigated on behalf of the largest telecommunication company in Taiwan in a retrial related to cell sites, overturning the original final verdict and procuring a favorable final verdict.

  • Defended a large multinational multi-level marketing company in a third-instance appeal concerning food hygiene at the Taiwan Supreme Court, obtaining a favorable final judgment.

  • Advocated on behalf of a large multinational software company in an employment termination lawsuit regarding sexual harassment, resulting in a favorable decision.

  • Drafted answers and filed counterclaim on behalf of a large global manufacturer in a lawsuit relating to silicon wafers, acquiring a favorable verdict in both the complaint and counterclaim.

  • Prepared petition for the largest telecommunication company in Taiwan for constitutional interpretation of a law by the Taiwan Constitutional Court.

  • Prepared briefs and evidence for a complex civil trial concerning clinical medical trial for a Taiwanese clinical research organization.

  • Conducted legal research for a damages-related arbitration for a large Hong Kong entity, where our team won USD 70 million for the client.

  • Settled an employment termination lawsuit with an amount of 5.5% of the plaintiff-claimed damages on behalf of a large international pharmaceutical company.

  • Represented clients in criminal inspections with regard to data privacy, breach of trust, and fraud.

  • Undertook legal research and negotiated with a labor union on behalf of a large Taiwanese bank in a strike crisis, settling the case and preventing the strike.
