Biography

Murtuza Hussain is an associate in the North America Tax Practice Group and resides in the Houston Office. Prior to joining Baker McKenzie, Murtuza was an associate in the Houston office of a national law firm where he represented public and private companies on a variety of tax matters.

Practice Focus

Murtuza advises public and private companies on the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, financings, and joint venture transactions, as well as all other aspects of transactional tax and tax planning matters. He also has significant experience in private equity fund formations, advising on state and local tax matters, and representing clients in tax controversy matters.

Representative Legal Matters

Prior to joining the Firm, Murtuza completed the following matters:

  • Advised on the tax aspects relating to equity consolidations and restructurings.

  • Represented issuer and advised on the tax aspects of a USD 300 million senior debt securities offering.

  • Advised financial institutions on the Texas tax consequences of renewable power projects.

  • Represented a private equity sponsor in the tax aspects of the USD 1.6 billion sale of a midstream company's equity investment.

  • Represented a private equity sponsor focused on the upstream and midstream sectors of the oil and gas industry in connection with the tax aspects of forming multiple private equity funds.

  • Represented a private equity sponsor in the tax aspects of the USD 325 million sale of the owner and operator of a multipart crude oil and frac sand logistics system originating in the heart of the Delaware Basin.

  • Advised multiple private equity firms and their affiliates on the tax aspects of the formation, fundraising, and operation of dual working interest/NPI funds.
