Biography

Jörg Hanken joined the German Tax Practice Group in Baker McKenzie's Munich office in March 2022. He is a partner with 24 years of experience in international taxation and transfer pricing combined with extensive operational implementation and transfer pricing automation knowledge. Jörg solved tax, transfer pricing and technology challenges as a Big4 Transfer Pricing Partner, Global TP Technology Leader and German Digital Services Tax & Legal Leader, as well as Central European Head of Tax at Ingram Micro. He has trained over 700 controllers in intense transfer pricing seminars at the Controller Academy. Jörg is a lecturer at universities and a regular speaker on global and German conferences. He is an editor and co-author of the 4th edition “Transfer Pricing - Practical Guide for Controllers and Tax Experts” (German language, May 2023) and one of the "Leading Tax Controversy Experts" (International Tax Review).

Practice Focus

Jörg supports global clients on a broad range of cross-border matters, including complex planning, restructuring and dispute avoidance as well as dispute resolution cases. He also assists clients in automating operational transfer pricing processes, taking into account important aspects of business steering as well as tax compliance requirements. Jörg serves family owned, mid-size and stock listed clients from all industries. He is passionate about the innovative development of planning and defense solutions, which requires creativity, number-crunching skills and tenacity.

Representative Legal Matters

Prior to joining the Firm, he engaged in,

  • Analysis, planning, implementation, documentation and defense of complex transfer pricing structures for all group sizes, inbounds, outbounds and all industries. 

  • Optimization and automation of transfer pricing processes taking into account controlling, tax and IT aspects.

  • Global bank: Review of operational transfer pricing processes from a functional, technical and organisational perspective, identification of functional, technical and organisational improvements, e.g. defining RACI charts, simplifying TP models, replacing Excel sheets by SAP solution etc.

  • Innovative transfer pricing dispute avoidance and dispute resolution (APA’s, MAP’s, Joint Audits) in Europe, Eastern-Europe, US, sometimes first mover.

  • Setting up TP model for new and huge polysilicon plant in the US, considering TP-, accounting-, VAT- and customs-aspects.

  • Holistic end-to-end TP project for a big chemical group.

  • Designing, rolling-out and defending TP model for numerous permanent establishments of a construction group.

  • Innovative and successful defense against a significant TP adjustment for a German LRD of a US pharmaceutical group.

  • Designing and rolling-out a new and sophisticated profit split TP model for 65 subsidiaries.

  • Setting up TP models for e-commerce trading groups.

  • Idea, design, development and management of software solutions in the field of transfer pricing (e.g. for global TP documentation, global TP regulations database, highly automated Excel tools for cost allocations, Data & Analytics Dashboards for e.g. CbCR, OECD Pillar I/II, CUP testing with MS Power BI or Tableau).

  • Several proof-of-concept and implementation projects of the unique Transfer Pricing Management Tool® of Optravis.
