"Most of us remember exactly where we were almost one year ago when we saw graphic video footage of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who held his knee directly on Mr. Floyd's neck for nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds without mercy. The brutal incident traumatized a nation, and inspired a Black Lives Matter movement around the world.
The trial has now concluded with the jury returning a verdict of guilty on all counts. This verdict does not and cannot bring George Floyd back to life, but it sends a strong message that no one is above the law, and that the police will be held accountable for engaging in criminal behavior. Unfortunately, this type of violence remains all too common, not just in the US, but around the world. While we breathe a collective sigh of relief that in this case the criminal justice system has done its job, there is still much more work to be done. At Baker McKenzie, we will continue to stand up against racism and violence wherever we see it, including the recent heinous attacks on Asian-Americans."
