Baker McKenzie Partner Jon Cowley has joined the Firm's International Commercial practice from its office in Hong Kong, bringing deep knowledge of US-China matters and years of experience assisting multinational companies with customs, export controls, supply chain, and cross-border regulatory matters.
Jon's move comes on the heels of the Biden-Harris administration's first high-level meeting with China and as the US government doubles down on its approach to key trade issues, including the recent announcement of the Executive Order on Supply Chains and the US Senate's confirmation of Katherine Tai as the new US trade representative.
Jon will advise businesses on US customs and trade issues, including tariff mitigation, supply chain structuring, trade risk management, compliance program enhancement, and customs controversy and audit support.
"With US-China negotiations poised to be at the top of the US administration's agenda, businesses will increasingly look to us for guidance. Jon's move into the North America team will strengthen expertise and client offerings in key areas of customs compliance, indirect tax planning, supply chain structuring and trade compliance advice, among others," said Jennifer Trock, chair of the North America International Commercial Practice Group.
“A leading lawyer in his field, Jon's expertise has brought immense value to Baker McKenzie's Asia Pacific trade and customs practice, and we look forward to all he will bring to our leading North America International Commercial practice," said Colin Murray, North America chief executive officer.
