The renowned German legal publishing house JUVE awarded Baker McKenzie the title of "Law Firm of the Year 2020 for Commercial/Trade/Logistics". The award was announced at the end of the livestream broadcast of this year's JUVE Award ceremony last night, October 30th. Due to COVID-19, the annual award gala could not take place in Frankfurt in the Alte Oper as usual. Instead, the former Swiss football referee Urs Meier presented the awards virtually.
Dr. Ulf Wauschkuhn, Head of the German Commercial Law Practice Group of Baker McKenzie: "The JUVE award as Law Firm of the Year for Commercial/Trade/Logistics is a great honor and we thank our clients for the trust they continually placed in us. We would also like to thank JUVE for the years of captivating market evaluations and hard work that the editors put into their research".
The jury's reasoning for the award inter alia notes: "Within just a few years, the law firm has developed into a serious competitor at the top tier in foreign trade law".
"This award, with reference to my role in the past years, is a great motivation. For my team and myself this will continue to be our benchmark for our client service in the future. Compliance with continuously evolving foreign trade laws and sustainability in the supply chain has become extremely important," adds Anahita Thoms, Head of the Foreign Trade Law Practice and Global Sustainability Lead Partner of the IMT Industry Group of Baker McKenzie.
The jury's tribute also notes: "While Baker has long been recognized for its solid advice on export control and customs law issues, [...] Thoms gave the practice an extraordinary boost. Under her leadership, attorneys from various disciplines such as antitrust and customs law as well as regulatory and compliance act much more as a unified team than before, which significantly increased the firm's visibility in foreign trade law. At the same time, the firm was able to expand its client base to include numerous DAX-listed companies and large international corporations. Clients praise Thoms to the highest tones, highlighting her 'strategic foresight and prudence' and praising her 'in-depth knowledge of US sanctions' as well as her 'great international expertise and perfect translation into actionable legal advice'.
JUVE furthermore praised: "In the context of compliance with foreign trade law, Thoms also sets special standards by advising international corporations and non-governmental organizations on human rights and sustainability in global supply chains. In this field, […], the law firm is one of the pioneers in Germany."
