Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow, the member firm of Baker McKenzie International in Singapore, is expanding its Competition practice with the strategic appointments of Harikumar ("Hari") Sukumar Pillay as principal and Lip Hang Poh as competition economist.

Hari, who had spent close to 10 years at the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore where he was Director of Enforcement, is a competition law and regulation practitioner with more than 14 years of legal experience in both the public sector and private practice. His practice covers competition law and regulation related advisory work in Singapore and the Southeast Asia region. He regularly assists clients with matters relating to cartel investigations, mergers and acquisitions, joint venture agreements, abuse of dominance investigations, competition compliance and audits. He also advises competition authorities on enforcement strategies, competition policy, institutional frameworks and work process reviews, and legislative amendments.

Lip Hang, who also worked in both the public sector and private practice in the past eight years, has extensive competition law and economics experience. His work spans a broad spectrum of sectors, including aviation, e-commerce, fast-moving consumer goods, financial services, hospitality, IT services, healthcare, manufacturing, shipping and telecommunications. He regularly advises clients on the economic analysis from the aspect of competition law, in particular, mergers and acquisitions, joint venture agreements, market studies, abuse of dominance, and cartel investigations. Lip Hang will join Baker McKenzie's global team of competition economists based across Singapore, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Washington D.C. and Bogota.

Notably in the past three years, both Hari and Lip Hang have advised competition commissions of Southeast Asian countries on drafting of new merger control regimes, reviewing jurisdiction specific Competition Acts and were appointed as monitoring trustee in a merger. Both Hari and Lip Hang have also worked on drafting the ASEAN Toolkit on Enforcement Strategies for the ASEAN competition authorities, especially on the priority setting and the identification of specific and realistic entry points for competition law enforcement.

Managing Principal of Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow Andrew Martin, said: "We are very pleased to be bringing Hari and Lip Hang to the Firm. Their reputation and track record in the industry is a welcome addition to our full service offering, as we set an eye to expanding our domestic and regional market reach in the competition sector.”

"The competition authorities in this region are reviewing and redrafting regulatory parameters to become more and more sophisticated, by looking at their counterparts in more mature jurisdictions such as the US and UK. Lip Hang and I are very excited to be joining the Firm at this point, where our outlook and opportunities for practice growth on this sector are very much aligned," said Hari.

Stephen Crosswell, Asia Pacific Chair of Baker McKenzie’s Antitrust and Competition Practice, said: "I echo Andrew's sentiment on hiring both Hari and Lip Hang at an important juncture of the practice's growth trajectory. Their experience will further bolster both our regional and global offering for clients as we see continued increases in competition enforcement around the globe, regionally and in ASEAN jurisdictions."

"By having the best talent - with strong track records in merger control, cartels, competition litigation, enforcement and advisory, and wide sectorial experience - we continue to provide our clients with one of the preeminent competition practices in the world, helping to seamlessly navigate an increasingly complex cross-border competition law landscape," added Stephen.
