Baker McKenzie strengthens its tax practice with a lateral hire: Thomas Gierath joins the Munich office as a partner effective January 1, 2020. Thomas Gierath joins as partner from Reed Smith in Munich where he was for seven years and headed its German tax practice. Prior to that, he was National Partner at Dechert. He will be joined by Associate Viktoria Ritter, who has worked at Reed Smith for 2 ½ years.

Thomas Gierath has extensive and long-standing experience in national and international transaction tax law. His practice focuses on advising companies and investors on private equity, M&A and real estate transactions. In addition, he advises founders and investors on venture capital financing and management participations. Finally, he advises initiators and investors on the establishment and structuring of private equity and real estate funds. 

Most recently, he managed the acquisition of two confectionery producers for the United Chocolate Group, a portfolio company of DPK Deutsche Privatkapital, and from a tax point of view accompanied the sale of Neue Halberg Guss, a subsidiary of Prevent Group, to One Square Advisers, as well as the sale of Minimax Viking Group to Intermediate Capital Group (ICG). He also provided tax advice on the restructuring of the Schenck Prozess Group following the entry of investor Blackstone and the seller consortium around the venture capital investor MIG Fonds on the sale of Siltectra GmbH to Infineon Technologies AG. He also advised Deutsche Bank on the tax aspects of the sale of a ship loan portfolio worth US $ 1 billion.

Thomas Gierath is a lawyer, tax consultant and specialist in tax law.
