Quisumbing Torres launched the firm's Women in Law Series, featuring its first featured speaker, Corporate & Commercial Practice Group Head Christina Macasaet-Acaban. The kick-off event, entitled Doing Business Made Easier : Understanding the Revised Corporation Code was held last 25 March 2019 at the UP BGC Campus, Bonifacio Global City.  The event was attended by over 100 representatives from key industry players in the Philippine business arena.

"QT's Women in Law series is our way of celebrating the talent, mentorship and passion of the great female lawyers in our firm," shared QT Partner Gil Zerrudo as he delivered the welcome remarks.  "Our firm is a supporter of the HeForShe, a solidarity campaign for the advancement of women, initiated by UN Women. The movement involves what is referred to as the Women's Empowerment Principles.  These principles are meant to guide companies to join this global movement for sustainable development.  I am very proud to say that all QT lawyers have committed to these principles. And, we all take steps as a firm and as individual practitioners to align with these tenets --- not only in our workplace but in all occasions and avenues to promote this campaign. Launching QT's Women in Law Series is a testament to our promise," he continued.

Each Women in Law session will come in 2 parts as it serves its dual purpose of building awareness in the movement in support of women in the legal practice, and, providing updates and key trends in a relevant legal development.

In its inaugural event, a panel session moderated by the European Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Committee representative Jennifer Alava-Francisco sparked conversations on the various achievements and contributions that have been brought about by women in law and the challenges and opportunities they face.   "I am honored to have been part of the first women in law series. It’s a great platform for all to collaborate towards sharing and building on current successes. It serves as an effective avenue to address challenges that could be used as  opportunities to improve and contribute in the corporate arena. This forum can definitely enable, empower and build the community,” Jen shared.

Jen was joined by Divina Ilas-Panganiban (Partner, Quisumbing Torres), Jazel Calvo-Cariño (Country Legal Head, Sanofi Philippines) and Eir Antig  (Head of Legal, FWD Life Insurance Corporation).  We hope that, by sharing our own personal journeys, we were able to inspire you to continue the conversation about the advancement of women in all fields of law and to celebrate being a woman in the legal profession," said Divina.

Doing Business Made Easier: Understanding the Revised Corporation Code

Each Women in Law session will highlight a key legal development to be discussed by a featured QT female speaker.

In the inaugural session, Christina Macsaet-Acaban provided a comprehensive presentation on Understanding the Business Impact of the Revised Corporation Code, identifying key changes in areas relating to the incorporation and organization of corporations, corporate governance structure, requirements and processes, the creation and features of a one person corporation, and the expanded powers of the SEC and extensive penalties for violation.

Divina will be leading the next Women in Law session, slated in June.
