Leading global law firm Baker McKenzie received the Best Pro Bono Law Firm 2018 Award from the ProBono Colombia Foundation, an organization that works to expand equal access to justice for vulnerable populations in the country and region.
Baker McKenzie’s ongoing pro bono efforts and longstanding commitment to philanthropy in the region helped the Firm earn the recognition. The Firm’s philanthropic initiatives in Colombia were led by its attorneys in Bogota, in conjunction with the Pro Bono Colombia Foundation, and focused on offering legal advice to underserved communities and cases with a broad social impact.
"Through pro bono work we can give back to the communities where we have a presence around the world. In Colombia, we are particularly pleased to see that the Firm’s shared commitment to provide legal services to non-profit organization has been embraced by our attorneys, which has allowed us to see sustained growth in the number and the scope of the pro bono projects in which we participate,” said Tatiana Garcés, Managing Partner of Baker McKenzie in Bogota. "We are pleased that our commitment has been recognized by one of our community partners, the ProBono Colombia Foundation."
Recently, Baker McKenzie's office in Bogotá participated in projects with the Pro Bono Colombia Foundation involving the development and implementation of the first social impact bonds in the country. The Firm also assisted in the legal analysis of the impact of the humanitarian crisis derived from the exodus of Venezuelan immigrants to Colombia, among other initiatives.
"We awarded Baker McKenzie with this recognition because of its steadfast commitment to our work and the seriousness with which it takes its efforts on behalf of pro bono clients," said Ana María Arboleda, Executive Director of the ProBono Colombia Foundation.
Baker McKenzie Colombia is also a signatory of the Pro Bono Declaration of the Americas by the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, a renowned non-profit organization that promotes equitable access to justice through the support of a team of dedicated lawyers across various countries, with the goal of building civil society and developing joint efforts to expand pro bono initiatives in the region.
