Having been a national sponsor of the Asian Australian Lawyers Association (AALA) since August 2015, Baker McKenzie is proud to host the launch of the Queensland Branch of the AALA on the evening of 14 June. The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG will officially launch the Queensland Branch of the AALA and deliver a keynote speech on Cultural Diversity in the Law.
Baker McKenzie's Brisbane Managing Partner, Leigh Duthie stated: "We are delighted to host what is a very important event in support of the AALA expanding its presence to Brisbane. The AALA plays a critical role in promoting and facilitating Asian cultural diversity in the senior ranks of the legal profession. The Association also brings together members of the legal profession of Asian heritage and cultural background and others with an interest in Asia. Baker McKenzie is a committed partner of the AALA in its role of providing a cohesive professional network to advocate for, and provide support to, AALA members and to benefit from shared learning and experience."
As part of the launch event, the AALA will also be holding a short panel session on Asian Australian Leadership in the Legal Industry. Panellists include:
- Laina Chan | Barrister and Director of the Society of Construction Law Australia (SoCLA);
- Associate Professor Ann Black | Expert in the legal cultures of Asia at UQ and co-author of Law and Legal Institutions of Asia: Traditions, adaptations and innovations (Cambridge University Press 2011); and
