Leading international law firm Baker McKenzie Habib Al Mulla has strengthened its intellectual property (IP) capabilities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with the appointment of David Harper as a partner and head of the Firm's UAE IP practice.

David Harper joins from IP firm Cedar White Bradley, where he was a partner specialising in regional trade mark prosecution, advisory and enforcement work throughout the Middle East for global and regional companies. After being admitted to the bar in New Zealand, David moved to Dubai in 2008, where he now has over nine years' experience advising on all aspects of intellectual property matters in the UAE and the broader MENA region.

David advises in relation to both contentious and non-contentious matters concerning the protection and enforcement of trade marks, copyright, and domain names. He routinely advises on regional clearance and filing strategies, multi-jurisdictional objections and disputes, and brand enforcement measures. David's clients feature leading corporates, financial institutions and government entities across a wide range of sectors, including hospitality, tourism, technology, media, telecoms, healthcare, retail and FMCG.

"The UAE is driving an ambitious innovation strategy and recognises the need to protect and promote the fruits of such innovation, including intellectual property rights, both domestically and across borders," said Dr. Habib Al Mulla, Executive Chairman of Baker McKenzie Habib Al Mulla in the UAE. “David Harper's proven track record and pragmatic approach will greatly benefit our clients looking to manage and protect their IP assets. We are delighted to welcome David to the Firm.”

David is the fourth senior lawyer that Baker McKenzie Habib Al Mulla has hired in the last six months, having appointed Matthew Shanahan (Partner, Financial Services Regulatory), Andrew Mackenzie (Partner, Arbitration) and Reggie Mezu (Senior Special Counsel, Tax). This brings the number of partners based in the UAE to 19, with the firm offering clients a unique platform of local and international expertise, in English and Arabic, on banking and finance, corporate and commercial, dispute resolution (litigation and arbitration), employment, intellectual property, maritime and real estate matters
