- Baker McKenzie ranked in 6th place in the Top 100 Employers 2018;
- The firm is also named Top Trans Employer;
- And Highly Commended for its LGBT network group.
A record year for leading global law firm Baker McKenzie, as it ranks in sixth place in the annual Stonewall Top 100 Employers 2018. Not only was this its highest ranking to date, but the Firm was also one of only ten employers to feature in this year's new Stonewall Top Trans Employer listing. Furthermore, Baker McKenzie's LGBT+ allies network - BakerAllies - has been recognised for the first time as a Top Performing Network Group and been 'highly commended' for its huge contribution to equality and inclusion.
Alex Chadwick, London Managing Partner, Baker McKenzie, said: "We are delighted to be included once again in Stonewall's prestigious listing and thrilled to be ranked in sixth place this year; a record ranking for us. To be recognised for our ongoing support for the LGBT+ community in the workplace is a wonderful reflection of the continued dedication and great work of our people and the culture of Baker McKenzie. We believe that diversity within our firm makes us stronger and that all of our people deserve to be their authentic selves at work."
Commenting on the firm's recognition as a Top Trans Employer, Baker McKenzie Partner Harry Small, Chair of the Firm's Global LGBT+ Business Resource Group, commented: "At Baker McKenzie we strongly believe that sexual orientation, gender identity and expression should form no barrier in the workplace, and we want all employees to feel they are fully supported. So, I am proud that today we are one of only ten employers to be recognised by Stonewall as being trans inclusive. This index marks a big step in recognising that we all have a responsibility to create an environment which is inclusive for all and this means for the trans community alike."
Last month, Baker McKenzie successfully advised Stonewall on a pro bono basis in its first ever intervention before the Court of Appeal in a landmark case concerning the rights of transgender people. In September 2017, the Firm announced the implementation of Transition at Work Guidelines in its London office, seeking to address and increase awareness of gender transition in the workplace.
Baker McKenzie is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion for all its lawyers and staff. Last year, the Firm was named one of Stonewall's Top Global Employers 2017. Staff involvement in diversity issues is encouraged through focus groups and activities such as our LGBT+ and Allies network which over one-third of employees in Baker McKenzie's London office are members. The firm also supports a number of LGBT community groups, including Just Like Us and The London Gay Men's Chorus.
From Stonewall, Darren Towers, Executive Director, said: “Baker McKenzie and all those who have made this year’s Top 100 Employers list have done a fantastic job. Taking part in our Index shows real commitment to understanding and advancing LGBT equality. This year, for the first time, the Index looked at what employers were doing for trans equality in the workplace. This work is crucial. We recently published LGBT in Britain: Trans Report, which revealed the profound inequality facing trans people in Britain today. Half of trans people have hidden their identity at work for fear of discrimination. This must change and it’s encouraging to see so many organisations make a commitment to trans equality. With their support and hard work we can create a world where all lesbian, gay, bi and trans employees are welcomed and accepted without exception.”
