- He will succeed Claudia Prado, the first woman to lead the region
Leading global law firm Baker McKenzie named Jaime Trujillo, former Managing Partner of the Firm’s Colombia office, as the new Chair of the Firm’s Latin America Regional Council (LARC), effective immediately. Jaime is also becoming a member of the Firm's Global Executive Committee, and the Chair of the Firm's Financial Committee.
A renowned M&A and transactional lawyer, Jaime is succeeding Claudia Prado, who led the Latin American region since 2013.
In this new role, Jaime will lead the Regional Council, responsible for driving the Firm's strategy in Latin America and formed by Managing Partners from Argentina, Brazil*, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, the seven jurisdictions where Baker McKenzie has offices in the region.
For over 20 years, Jaime has advised local clients in Colombia as well as multinationals in transactions throughout Latin America and globally. He has assisted in multi-million acquisitions across various industries including consumer goods and retail, infrastructure, healthcare, financial institutions, among others.
In addition to his expertise in M&A, Jaime has advised on some of the most complex private equity and banking and finance matters in the region, including leveraged buyouts, investments, acquisitions and disposals.
Jaime first joined Baker McKenzie in Colombia in 1985 as a law clerk. In 1997, he was appointed partner and in 2000 was designated a principal in the Firm. He was the leader of Baker McKenzie’s Latin America Mergers & Acquisitions/Private Equity Practice Group between 2013 and 2016, and has been consecutively ranked as a Band 1 lawyer by Chambers Latin America since the inception of these rankings in 2009. Tatiana Garces is now the Managing Partner for the Colombia office.
Baker McKenzie's Global Chair Paul Rawlinson said, "We have had plenty to be proud of this year - record client demand for our services, the launch of our market-leading innovation initiative, and our long-term strategic investments, so I look forward to working with Jaime and his leadership team to continue to drive our success in Latin America".
"I would also like to sincerely thank Claudia Prado for her exceptional leadership during her tenure as the first woman Chair of our Latin America region.”
Speaking after this announcement, Trujillo commented: “I am honored by the trust that my colleagues have placed in me. Latin America is known both for its attractive business opportunities and its regulatory complexity."
Our goal is to help our clients navigate the region’s dynamic business landscape.
"We have made industry-leading investments in technology, developed relationships with key players, and pioneered innovative legal practices to provide that exceptional legal advice to our clients and ensuring that we stay at the forefront of legal developments in the region.”
Baker McKenzie also announced the appointment of Erik Scheer as the regional Chair for EMEA, David Allen as Global Chair of the Firm's Private Equity Practice and Constanze Ulmer-Eilfort, as Chair of the Firm's Diversity & Inclusion Committee.
