Baker McKenzie has advised industry-leading automotive company Daimler AG on its European joint venture with Via, the real-time ride-sharing company, to launch on-demand ride-sharing services across Europe. London is to be the first city to launch the new Via-Daimler on-demand shuttle service by the end of 2017, with expansion to other European cities following soon thereafter.

Daimler AG and Via have worked together since 2015. As part of the joint venture, the two companies will collaborate on the design of an optimised Mercedes-Benz Van shuttle for on-demand shuttle service use. Via's shared ride platform is already available in New York, Chicago and Washington DC providing over 1 million rides per month.

Commenting on the joint venture, Baker McKenzie corporate partner Jannan Crozier, said: "We were delighted to advise Daimler AG on its joint venture with Via. This exciting partnership will completely revolutionise transport and mobility in London and across the rest of Europe and indicates a new direction of travel for the automotive sector. For our client, this marks the next step in their strategy for the future and in the expansion of their range of new mobility services."

German Baker McKenzie corporate partner Peter Wand adds: “This partnership between Daimler and Via will change the future of mobility in Europe. The cooperation with public transit operators creates unique opportunities for our client to significantly improve mobility while reducing congestion without incurring any additional infrastructure costs.”

The Baker McKenzie team was led by Corporate partners Jannan Crozier (London) and Dr Peter Wand (Frankfurt), together with Senior Associate James Heller (London) and further colleagues also in the Amsterdam office.
