Leading global law firm Baker McKenzie is marking its 80th year in Colombia, where it has innovated and revolutionized the country’s legal services sector. Through its long and distinguished history in the Colombian market, the Firm has established itself as a recognized leader in simplifying complexity over decades in ways that are practical and aligned with the business goals of its clients.
James W. Raisbeck founded his legal firm in Bogota in 1937 to help foreign multinationals in Colombia overcoming language barriers preventing them from entering and growing their businesses in the country. In 1960, Raisbeck was joined by his son, James W. F. Raisbeck, and created Raisbeck and Raisbeck, which helped the new firm position itself as a preferred source for legal advice for foreign companies. After four years of negotiations, in 1979, the firm that by that time was known as Raisbeck, Lara, Rodríguez and Rueda, officially became part of Baker McKenzie.
Today, Baker McKenzie is the leading global firm with over 5,000 lawyers in 77 offices and 47 countries across the world. The Bogota office has been and continues to be of great strategic importance to the Firm’s operations in Latin America, earning multiple national and international recognitions in transactional and non-transactional practice areas.
Despite a challenging and highly competitive environment, Baker McKenzie Colombia continues to grow and invest in the development of innovative and pragmatic strategies, as well as the application of global tools that offer real benefits to clients. Today, the Bogota office has 70 associate lawyers and 11 partners.
Claudia Prado, Baker McKenzie's regional chair for Latin America, added: "Baker McKenzie has demonstrated a solid commitment with the Latin American region over decades. We are pleased to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Bogota office where we have been offering innovative legal advice to local and multinational companies anticipating challenges combining deep local expertise with an unmatchable regional and global footprint."
Following a successful 25-year career at Baker McKenzie Colombia, the Firm has recently named Tatiana Garces as Managing Partner, making her the first woman to hold this position. Garces is also the Lead Partner of the Labor Law Practice Group and she has been recently appointed regional leader for the Latin American Employment and Compensation Practice Group.
"I am delighted with this appointment and the opportunity to continue developing a successful career at a leading law firm that has shown the ability to help client overcoming business challenges in Colombia for eight decades. This appointment also exemplifies Baker McKenzie’s commitment to the professional development of women. We will continue to support gender equality programs across the Firm,” said Garces.
