Quisumbing Torres recently hosted the "Accelerated Route to Membership Course" of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) East Asia Branch, in collaboration with the Philippine Institute of Arbitrators' (PIArb). The event was held from 17 to 18 March, at Quisumbing Torres' office in Manila. The course is composed of a series of workshops for professionals wishing to obtain the CIArb's Membership designation (MCIArb). The workshops are conducted in small groups where participants are assessed regarding their knowledge of arbitration by experienced practitioners. Participants are also assessed based on a written essay given prior to the course, and a closed-book examination on the 2nd day of the workshop.
The two-day workshop was spearheaded by Quisumbing Torres' Jared Amoroso and PIArb's Senior Vice President for Programs, Zenaida Ongkiko-Acorda. Jared is a mid-level associate in Quisumbing Torres' Dispute Resolution Practice Group of the firm and the Vice President for Professional Development of PIArb.
Four arbitration experts were invited to act as tutors and assessors during the workshop: Mary Bee Lay Thomson, Anthony Houghton, Mario Valderrama and Louise Barrington.
More than 20 participants from various law firms and companies attended the workshop. Several lawyers from Quisumbing Torres' Dispute Resolution Practice Group also participated in the workshop. They are: Michael Macapagal (senior associate), Camille Bianca Gatmaitan-Santos (mid-level associate), Grace Ann Lazaro (mid-level associate), and Erasto Miguel Aguila (associate).
