Law360 has once again named Baker McKenzie's Tax Practice as a Practice Group of the Year, recognizing the Firm's global platform and highly regarded work in the US Tax Court for Altera Corporation in 2015 and Medtronic Inc. in 2016, among other notable matters.
Law360 received more than 600 submissions for this year's awards, which annually recognize "the law firms that racked up victories in litigation and closed the big deals to make their mark among clients and throughout the legal industry." Winners were selected by the size, importance and complexity of their wins in 2016. This is Baker McKenzie's third time receiving this recognition in the last four years.
Law360 pointed to the Tax Practice's award-winning work for Altera Corporation, led by Duane Webber, in successfully challenging an ambiguous statute in federal tax law. The publication noted how the case "made waves not just in the transfer pricing context, but also in the broader administrative law context."
The publication also highlighted how a team led by Tom Linguanti secured a major victory for Medtronic Inc. in its $1.36 billion transfer pricing dispute with the Internal Revenue Service. "Experts have said the case serves as a roadmap for taxpayers in similar transfer pricing disputes by highlighting the importance of marshaling specific evidence," Law360 wrote.
Law360 additionally called attention to the Firm's work advising Abbott Laboratories on tax matters in its $25 billion cash-and-stock acquisition of St. Jude Medical, as well as representing FedEx Corporation in its $4.8 billion acquisition of TNT Express.
"With over 275 tax practitioners across North America and 950 world-wide, Baker McKenzie has the ability to advise multinational corporations globally by simplifying the evolving tax landscape with practical and business-minded advice," said Tom Linguanti, who also serves as Chair of the Firm's North America Tax Practice. "We are honored to be recognized by Law360 for the second consecutive year as a market-leading tax practice, and my colleagues and I look forward to continuing to help our clients navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain tax environment."
