Celebrating a Decade of Innovation in the Brand Management Space
Baker McKenzie’s Global Intellectual Property Support Centre (GIPSC) recently celebrated its 10th year anniversary in Manila. Members of the IP team’s leadership – Ben Allgrove, Kevin O’ Brien, Say Sujintaya, Dianne Phoebus and John Flaim – along with other partners in various regions were on hand to join the festivities and welcome client guests including representatives from Unilever, the first GIPSC client. The IP Firm leaders also joined the guests in touring the Manila facility.
In 2007, Baker McKenzie established GIPSC in Manila, Philippines, as a dedicated off-shore IP service unit primarily supporting our global trademark registration and portfolio management operations.
We became the first law firm to utilize technology, streamlined processes and offshoring strategy to drive costs down while ensuring the highest level of quality across multiple jurisdictions. Now GIPSC is a center of excellence and critical component of our trademark registration and portfolio management services. From a single client in 2007, GIPSC now handles nearly 200,000 trademarks and designs for 11 global brand owners.
John Flaim, Chair of the Global IP Practice Group, describes GIPSC as an excellent example of the Firm's innovative mindset: "GIPSC was a game changer for us. Our clients rightfully want both quality legal service on a global basis and competitive pricing. Having our GIPSC model has allowed us to do just that; it allows our lawyers to focus on providing top-notch legal advice while taking away the administrative burden that comes with protecting brands globally across numerous jurisdictions. "
Before GIPSC, it was just virtually impossible to carry out instructions within 24 hours of instruction - at a consistently high level of quality across the world – due to logistics. Like with our own lawyers, our GIPSC model also empowers our clients to focus on strategic brand and business decisions and client counseling."
Global Chair, Paul Rawlinson, said: “This is a wonderful occasion to celebrate. The team has been on a fantastic journey from the beginning – what started as a pioneering effort in the IP community quickly became a slick operation which is known today for its innovative services delivered in a unique way around the world.”
