Baker McKenzie has appointed Sydney based Ben McLaughlin as the global chair of the Firm’s Healthcare group. Ben, who has over 25 years' experience advising leading healthcare companies on mergers and acquisitions and equity capital markets, has also served as the Group's Asia-Pacific Chair until now.

Ben has also been recognized by Chambers for his work in M&A matters, as well as in pharmaceuticals and healthcare.  Having practised as a CPA, Ben is legally qualified in Australia and New York and holds four degrees. With a particular interest in Health Technology, Ben invented the Baker McKenzie Healthcare MapApp, a mobile application that enables clients to access over 4,000 pages of legal summaries. In addition, Ben also recently launched Baker McKenzie's Healthtech Report: Powering The Future Of Healthcare In Asia Pacific.

“It is a great honour to lead the Firm’s Healthcare group," said Mr. McLaughlin. “It is a very exciting role and one that I look forward to taking on. For the past five years, we have ranked number one for healthcare M&A by deal volume, completing more cross-border transactions than any other law firm. In healthcare generally, we are ranked by Chambers in the top three tiers globally, and number one in Asia-Pacific. Our global healthcare team not only works across borders, but across practice areas to coordinate the worldwide protection of healthcare patents and brands, develop global transfer pricing and tax planning strategies, and represent clients in product liability cases and complex disputes."

Ben will lead a global team of more than 500 lawyers including molecular biology, biotechnology, pharmacology, nursing and bioethics experts as well as former life sciences professionals who apply their expertise to help clients overcome legal and business challenges.

Ben emphasised: "Our team includes many practitioners with doctoral degrees in natural sciences who use their knowledge of science and technology to help clients mitigate risk and capitalise on opportunities in this fast-moving sector."

Ben succeeds London-based Jane Hobson.

"I am delighted to welcome Ben to this significant role as the head of our healthcare group,” said Paul Rawlinson, Global Chair of Baker McKenzie. “His extensive expertise in leading teams through many high-profile deals will be a great asset to our Firm. I'd also like to thank Jane for helping to grow the group during her highly successful tenure."

Baker McKenzie's Healthcare group is world renowned and the only firm in the world to be ranked Band 1 for life sciences in Chambers Asia Pacific. The firm has deep expertise in the Pharmaceuticals sector, regularly advising 9 of the world’s top 10 Pharmaceutical companies.

In 2015, Ben and the firm was awarded Most Innovative Use of Technology for the Healthcare MapApp by the Financial Times Innovative Lawyer Awards.
