Globally renowned law firm Baker McKenzie was recognised as Environmental, Energy and Natural Resources Team of the Year at this year's African Legal Awards. The award ceremony took place on 9 September at Wanderers Club in Johannesburg.
The winners of the African Legal Awards are decided by an independent judging panel made up of general counsel and other senior members of the legal community.
As one of the first international law firms to set up office in Africa more than 30 years ago, Baker McKenzie is uniquely positioned. The firm is passionate about encouraging interest in the legal industry and, in line with this, currently runs the following initiatives:
- A learning academy for partners and bespoke development for employees that takes the focus to one-on-one support rather than generic skills based training courses
- Embedding a best in-class health and wellbeing programme
- Taking flexible working to the next stage by focusing on agile working to give people more autonomy on where and how they work
Supporting diversity and inclusion initiatives such as blogs and diversity focus groups and their initiatives.
In addition, the firm’s Africa Team has developed a Pro Bono / CSR plan for Africa which revolves around a "signature" project focused on a theme of relevance. The firm was highly commended for its CSR initiatives.
