Erik Scheer, Member of the Global Executive Committee of Baker & McKenzie, spoke at the 29th Plenary Session of the Foreign Investors' Council Chaired by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (FIC). The topic of the FIC 29th Plenary Session was the “Astana International Financial Center” and the topic of Mr. Scheer's speech was "Improving the Structure of the Astana International Financial Center Court".
Curtis Masters, Partner and Director of the Almaty office of Baker & McKenzie, also participated in the Plenary session as a delegate together with Gulnur Bekmukhanbetova, Associate of Almaty office. Mr. Masters is a Member and Secretary of the Governing Board of the Kazakhstan Foreign Investors’ Council Association.
During the Foreign Investor Council events, Mr. Scheer, Mr. Masters and Ms. Bekmukhanbetova had a private meeting with Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Karim Massimov. They discussed Baker & McKenzie's operations in Kazakhstan and the Prime Minister thanked the Baker & McKenzie representatives for their contributions to the development of Kazakhstan's legal framework and judiciary.
The FIC (www.fic.kz) consists of the 30 international companies whose chief executives have been personally invited to join by President Nazarbayev. Baker & McKenzie is the only law firm invited by President Nazarbayev to be a FIC member. The FIC meets in person with the President on an annual basis and advises him on matters concerning Kazakhstan’s development, global position and investment climate. Throughout the year, the foreign member companies of FIC/KFICA work in tandem directly with the Government of Kazakhstan on projects and issues concerning such matters. The FIC/KFICA is the most prestigious and influential business organization in Kazakhstan.
