Highly regarded DOJ attorney Mark Hamer has joined Baker McKenzie's Global Antitrust and Competition Practice as a Partner in Washington, DC, bringing more than 25 years of extensive antitrust litigation experience, both as a senior trial lawyer with the government and as an antitrust litigator in private practice.

Mr. Hamer was with the DOJ for six years as a senior trial attorney, handling some of the Antitrust Division's highest-profile matters. Most prominently, he served a leading role in a two-month trial concerning competition in the credit card industry in which the DOJ prevailed. In addition, Mr. Hamer served on the trial teams of some of the Antitrust Division's most significant merger challenges.

"Global antitrust compliance is becoming more complex, and coordinated investigations among the world's competition authorities are increasingly common," said Samantha Mobley, Chair of Baker McKenzie's Global Antitrust and Competition Practice. "Our global antitrust practice has a proven record of achieving worldwide results for our clients, and Mark's extensive trial experience will further elevate the level of international one-stop shop service we provide."

Prior to joining the DOJ, Mr. Hamer was a partner in the Antitrust Litigation group at DLA Piper, where he handled complex multi-district antitrust class actions, as well as civil and criminal antitrust enforcement actions and investigations. He was an accomplished trial lawyer in private practice with substantial jury trial, bench trial, and arbitration experience in a wide variety of matters. In his public and private career, Mr. Hamer has developed expertise across a diverse array of industries, including payments, energy, computer hardware and software, consumer products, movie theaters, satellite broadcasting, and insurance.

"Mark's outstanding record as an antitrust litigator, both on the prosecution side as well as the defense, will be extremely valuable to our clients worldwide as they face increased scrutiny from regulators and also manage complex antitrust litigation portfolios," said Mark Taylor, Chair of the Firm's North American Litigation and Government Enforcement Practice. "Our litigation team is expanding in Washington as we grow our capabilities in a range of areas, and Mark will further strengthen our antitrust expertise."

Mr. Hamer is the latest in a series of attorneys with government experience to join Baker McKenzie in recent months. Former SEC litigator Rick Kirby recently joined, as well as former DOJ attorneys Ryan Fayhee and Maurice Bellan. In addition, former federal prosecutor William "Widge" Devaney joined the Firm in New York.

The North American Litigation and Government Enforcement Practice includes 19 former government lawyers, including a former FTC Commissioner and seasoned federal prosecutors and executive level staff from a range of US government agencies. The practice continues to actively grow its capabilities in North America, with global disputes lawyer Daniela Fonseca Puggina joining last fall, as well as former Canadian Attorney General Peter MacKay joining in Toronto.

"Baker McKenzie has a renowned and highly experienced antitrust practice," said Mr. Hamer. "I'm honored to join its leading team and I look forward to delivering results for our clients by providing effective litigation defense and antitrust counseling."

The Firm's Global Antitrust and Competition practice is the largest in the world, made up of over 300 antitrust lawyers and professionals operating out of a network spanning 47 countries. With deep knowledge of procedural rules and legal systems around the world, the practice helps clients navigate shifting antitrust and competition policies worldwide and implement complex cross-border compliance strategies.

Global Competition Review ranked Baker McKenzie among the Top 5 in its Global Elite list for the last two consecutive years, and the Financial Times recognized the practice in its 2015 Innovative Lawyer Awards for its unique Global Merger Analysis Platform.

"Mark's award-winning trial skills, and many years of experience providing antitrust litigation counsel, will be an enormous asset to our clients in this heightened global enforcement environment," concluded Rick Hammett, Baker McKenzie's North American Managing Partner. "We are thrilled to have him join our growing team in North America."
