As part of our COP26 activities, we hosted a STEPS to Net Zero event to consider the outcomes of COP26. Our event began with a keynote speech from Lord Karan Bilimoria CBE DL, the President of the CBI and evolved into a fruitful panel discussion with Baker McKenzie's experts and Eric Soubeiran, Managing Director of Unilever Climate and Nature Fund, and Vice-President Sustainable Sourcing and James Cameron, Adviser to the UK Government. You can watch the recording below.
COP26 - On the Ground From the Conference
Associate Kay She caught up with partner Andrew Hedges to discuss how the Consumer Goods and Retail sector is working towards achieving Net Zero.
Partner Greg McNab met with Lewis Pugh, Endurance Swimmer and United Nations Patron of the Oceans to discuss some of the key themes being raised at this year's conference. Lewis reflected on the oceans and youth day at COP26 and shared an inspiring story involving a heartfelt discussion with a young climate activist called Bella Lack.
No doubt a milestone year for action on climate change, our team on the ground at COP26 share their thoughts, experiences and opinion on the conference. The first video in a series, partner Greg McNab speaks with IETA President Dirk Forrister.
Actively Involved in Action on Climate Change
Enhancing climate change ambition was an overarching theme of COP26 and a priority of the UK Presidency. Investors, consumers and other stakeholders expect greater action and disclosure on climate risks and opportunities. As a result, Governments and private sector entities around the world are increasingly setting ambitious climate commitments. To achieve these goals, there is an urgent need to scale finance, technology and markets and couple it with strong leadership and governance.
With a long-standing history of participation and involvement at COP events, Baker McKenzie is at the cutting edge of climate change law and climate finance developments. We are currently engaged on multiple levels advising governments, companies and other entities on the implementation of the Paris Agreement, emerging compliance and disclosure regimes and innovative approaches to carbon markets and climate finance transactions. We have advised the governments of Morocco and Fiji on their COP Presidencies, and as part of COP26 were actively involved in Presidency initiatives to build a private sector finance system for net zero and to scale carbon markets including the Taskforce on Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets.
