On January 1, 2019, the new German Packaging Act (Verpackungsgesetz, "VerpackG") entered into force, thereby replacing the former Packaging Ordinance (Verpackungsverordnung, "VerpackV"). The VerpackG introduces several new obligations, in particular for manufacturers of so-called b2c packaging. Note that violations of the VerpackG do not only trigger administrative fines, but also a ban on placing on the market of non-compliant b2c packaging.
The German WEEE authority, the national register for waste electric equipment ("stiftung ear"), has surprisingly announced that from 1 May 2019 onwards the scope of application of WEEE will be extended to so-called "passive equipment", including cables, sockets, plugs, switches and busbars. From 1 May 2019 on, such products must be registered with stiftung ear in order to be placed on the German market.
