On 31 May 2017, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), an EU-wide European Supervisory Authority (ESA), released an Opinion, i.e. a legal instrument titled "General principles to support supervisory convergence in the context of the United Kingdom withdrawing from the European Union" (the ESMA Opinion). The ESMA Opinion, the first of a series, was released as part of the ESA and EU supervisory priorities of delivering improved supervisory convergence amongst the national competent authorities (NCAs) as well as and amongst the ESAs that make up the EU's European System of Financial Supervision (ESFS).
