Experienced IP Litigator Julie Petruzzelli Joins Baker & McKenzie

Firm News
2 July 2012
Washington, DC, USA, July 2, 2012 – Highly regarded IP litigator Julie A. Petruzzelli has joined Baker & McKenzie as a partner in Washington, DC, adding more than 25 years of experience in all aspects of intellectual property litigation, counseling, and licensing.

Recognized by Best Lawyers as the "2012 Washington DC Technology Law Lawyer of the Year," Ms. Petruzzelli has handled a wide variety of complex litigations, including patent, trade secret, trademark, and copyright litigations.  She has developed and implemented IP strategies for large and small domestic and international corporations, including analyzing and monitoring competitive IP.  In recent years, Ms. Petruzzelli's practice has increasingly focused on representing companies in Asia, especially in Japan.

"Julie is an excellent addition to our North American and global practices, which encompass more than 470 attorneys worldwide," said Kevin O’Brien, Chair of the Firm’s North America Intellectual Property Practice.  "Our clients continue to face a variety of threats to their IP assets, and companies will appreciate Julie's excellent credentials, especially combined with the experience of our strong regional IP team."

Ms. Petruzzelli has served as lead counsel in intellectual property matters covering a broad range of technologies and industries, including chemical, biochemical, pharmaceutical, ANDA, electrical, mechanical, medical device, and computer-related matters.  She has represented US and international companies before federal courts throughout the US and the International Trade Commission.

"We're delighted that Julie has joined Baker & McKenzie," said Elizabeth Espin Stern, Managing Partner of the Firm’s Washington, DC office.  "Julie's experience in the range of IP and patent litigation matters is impressive, and fits ideally as we continue to grow our DC office in ways that benefit clients and protects their interests."

Ms. Petruzzelli's recent matters include:
    • Representation of a Fortune Global 100 Japanese corporation in an Eastern District of Texas patent litigation involving visual voicemail
    • Representation of a worldwide pharmaceutical corporation in an ANDA litigation
    •  Representation of a travel services company in a trademark and unfair competition case in the District of Delaware

"I'm excited to join the Firm," said Ms. Petruzzelli.  "Baker & McKenzie has the largest IP practice in the world, and the Firm's market-leading global reach in 43 countries will be of value to my clients as they manage IP issues in the US and across borders."

Ms. Petruzzelli is the latest in a series of prominent lateral hires to join the Firm's Washington, DC office.  In recent months, IP lawyers Robert Parker and Richard Wells have joined the office.  In addition, compensation and benefits tax attorney Anne Batter; Partner Josh Odintz, a former Senior Advisor for Tax Reform to the Assistant Secretary at the US Department of the Treasury; and Mary Bennett, the former head of the Tax Treaty, Transfer Pricing & Financial Transactions Division of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Centre for Tax Policy & Administration, joined the Washington, DC office during the last year.

Ms. Petruzzelli received her JD from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1982 and a BS from Brown University in 1979.  She most recently was a partner at Venable LLP, where she had been the head of that firm's Technology Division and its IP Litigation Practice Group.  She is admitted to practice in New York and Washington, DC, and before the USPTO.
