As global citizens, the lawyers and professional staff who work in our firm’s 14 offices throughout Latin America are dedicated to using their experience, knowledge and resources to invest in the community, protect the environment and promote a culture of diversity and inclusion. Working from six countries, our Latin America professionals participate in a variety of corporate social responsibility initiatives, including:
- Preparing young people for entry into the workforce by hiring apprentices from the Learning and Professional Monitoring Center (CAMP). (Brazil office)
- Explaining tax, corporate and labor obligations to non-profits that provide assistance to senior citizens and people with disabilities as part of an annual conference sponsored by Fundacion Saldarriaga Concha. (Bogota office)
- Providing free legal advice on the formation of an educational non-profit that helps reintegrate youth at risk into society. (Santiago office)
- Helping a Mexican mother locate her 5-year-old son after he had been abducted by his father and taken to the U.S., and securing court rulings that enabled her to reunite with her son and take him back to Mexico. (Guadalajara & Mexico City offices)
- Providing scholarships for low-income law students at the Universidad Catolica Andres Bello, one of the biggest universities in Venezuela. (Caracas office)
Our Latin America offices are also dedicated to reducing energy use and waste. Our four Brazil offices, for example, use eco-paper made from locally sourced sugar cane bagasse when printing meeting agendas. Our five Mexico offices rely on video-conferencing to reduce air travel and all Latin America offices send client alerts and bullets in electronic format to reduce the use of paper.
As the first truly global law firm, diversity and inclusion have been part of our business model from the start. Since we opened our first office in Latin America in 1955, we have employed local lawyers with diverse backgrounds. Today, 64 percent of the lawyers in our Brazil offices are women, led by managing partner Claudia Farkouh Prado. Cultivating a culture of respect for our differences has enabled us to work across borders, cultures and practices with ease.
