Partner Kevin Coon of Baker & McKenzie Presents at Society for Corporate Compliance and Ethics’ 10th Annual Institute on Business and Human Rights

Firm News
21 September 2011
Toronto, Canada, 21 September 2011 – Baker & McKenzie Partner Kevin Coon presented at the Society of Corporate Compliance & Ethics’ 10th Annual Compliance & Ethics Institute held from September 11-14 in Nevada.

Mr. Coon was part of the session titled, “Navigating Compliance Risks in Emerging Markets,” and presented on the topic of “Human and Labor Rights Risks, Obligations & Compliance.”

Global corporations face an increasing risk to brand, reputation and legal compliance arising from human and international labor rights. The July 2011 adoption by the United Nations Human Rights Council of the John Ruggie Guidelines on “Protect, Respect, Remedy” has increased momentum and created a new impetus on corporations to adopt risk management and due diligence measures to address these issues in a proactive manner. Mr. Coon’s presentation and paper set out the sources of risk that companies face, outlined the framework of international human and labor rights and discussed measures corporations must take to remediate these issues.

The SCCE annual Compliance & Ethics Institute is the primary education and networking event for professionals working in the compliance and ethics profession across all industries around the world. Sessions at the 2011 conference explored real world compliance issues, practical applications, emerging trends, and state-of-the-art techniques in the compliance field and was attended by over 800 participants.

Mr. Coon is a member of Baker & McKenzie’s Labour & Employment Law Practice Group in Toronto. He has a long and deep involvement in the development of policy issues related to international human and labor standards, compliance and workplace issues. Mr. Coon has served in the Canadian employer delegation to the United Nations International Labour Organization, in the Committee on the Application of International Labour Standards, in the Committee reviewing the issues of the Informal Economy, in the Experts Panel on Corporate Social Responsibility, in the Drafting Committee that produced the International Labor Standard on HIV/AIDS in the World of Work; and, is the Employer spokesperson for the ILO Expert Panel on Working Conditions to be held in Geneva in October 2011.

Mr. Coon advises corporations, government and non-profit organizations on compliance related to labor standards, business and human rights, ethics, compliance and related matters to doing business in a global economy.
