Baker & McKenzie has had a presence in Colombia for more than five decades, offering extraordinary breadth and depth of experience in legal and commercial compliance in South America. With deep local knowledge and broad global capabilities across 67 jurisdictions, we help major Colombian organizations and inbound foreign investors seamlessly manage even the most complex local and cross-border transactions.

We have been involved in some of the country’s largest infrastructure projects, including the financing of gas pipelines in the western region. Our corporate and commercial practice is noted for its success in privatization projects and cross-border transactions, particularly in the telecommunications industry. We are often recognized for our success in dispute resolution and intellectual property matters and we act for a mix of local corporations and international banks in lending, restructuring, and local capital markets transactions.

We highlight new work permit rules for non-EU nationals in Sweden, stricter penalties for illegal employment of foreigners in China, the effects of the Red-White-Red-Card on immigration in Austria, the slowdown of US immigrant visa allocations, as well as new immigration developments in Colombia.
In this issue of Global Immigration & Mobility Update, our lawyers discuss stricter regulations for work permits in Sweden, “blue card” exemptions for specialized workers in Italy, integrity measures for US labor application reviews, challenges in Colombia’s Haya Convention commitments, and new requirements for foreign workers in China.
A new national and international arbitration law came into force in Colombia as of 12 October 2013. The new law provides for a more complete, clear and modern set of rules for national arbitration, amicable composition and international arbitration. This is particularly true for international arbitration where the new law adopted modern rules that respond to international standards following the UNCITRAL Model Law as amended in 2006. The goal is to position Colombia as a recognized seat for international arbitration.
