Obama’s International Tax Proposals - Impact on European Operations of US Multinationals

Tax related developments affecting US multi-nationals seems to be ever increasing in part due to the way companies do business and in part due to the pressure for local governments to protect their revenue base. Earlier this year, the US Treasury Department has issued a “Green Book” with more than 85 tax reform proposals. The proposed limitations with respect to the check-the-box elections, as introduced by the Green Book, is already causing a significant amount of re-thinking of current international structures. The check-the-box regime has allowed US multi-nationals to elect pass through treatment for single shareholder entities, as if the entity were a branch.
In this vodcast, Margreet Nijhof, Tax Partner of the North American Tax Practice Group of Baker & McKenzie LLP and recently seconded to the Amsterdam office, will discuss the Obama International Tax Proposal and will start the discussion on the potential impact of the check-the-box related proposal on European Operations of US Multinationals.
