Baker McKenzie has today appointed Duncan McGrath, a high-profile, senior debt capital markets (DCM) lawyer as a partner in the Sydney office. Duncan was previously a partner at Gilbert + Tobin, where he established and headed that firm's DCM and securitisation practice.

Baker McKenzie National Managing Partner, Anthony Foley, stated: "Duncan's reputation as a first-class DCM lawyer is well established and he comes highly commended. We are delighted to have him join our rapidly expanding team in Australia."

Ben McLaughlin, Head of the Australian Corporate Group, added: “We’re excited to have Duncan join us.  Not only will he enhance our Australian domestic capital markets practice, he’ll also add to our cross-border capability, working alongside our capital markets lawyers in other key money centres. In continuing Baker McKenzie’s commitment to leading the market and innovation, Duncan provides a wealth of experience in the developing corporate bond market in Australia.”

Koen Vanhaerents, Baker McKenzie Global Head of Capital Markets, said:  "We are excited to have Duncan join our Corporate Group in Sydney, adding further depth to our leading DCM capabilities."

Duncan is consistently recognised as a leading lawyer by directories including Chambers Global, Legal 500 and IFLR100. Who's Who Legal recently ranked Duncan as one of the world's leading Capital Markets Structured Finance lawyers.

While he specialises in DCM work, Duncan has a broad practice which includes securitisation, leveraged and general finance, peer-to-peer lending, insolvency and restructuring, blockchain and smart contracts.

On his appointment, Duncan said: "Much of my work is increasingly cross-border in nature, so it made sense to join the leading global law firm with 'one stop shop' capabilities. Baker McKenzie's expertise in US debt capital markets, as well as other markets including London, Europe, the US and Asia was a major factor in my decision to join the firm."

Baker McKenzie's Capital Markets team was rated the #1 legal team in the Australian market (for both issuers and lead managers) by Thomson Reuters in 2016 and Q1 of 2017. In Q1 of 2017, the firm also topped the Thomson Reuters Australian League tables for M&A (by deal value) and was ranked #2 by deal volume.

Thomson Reuters also ranked Baker McKenzie #1 for M&A in Asia Pacific in 2016 for the seventh consecutive year.  In 2017 ACRITAS ranked Baker McKenzie the #1 global law firm brand, for the eighth consecutive year, and the #1 law firm brand in Asia Pacific.
