Dr. Arne Friel heads Baker & McKenzie's German-Austrian Corporate Restructuring & Insolvency Practice Group. He routinely advises clients on all aspects of corporate, real estate and insolvency laws.

Practice Focus

Dr. Friel advises clients and investors on all aspects of German corporate law, particularly those involving national or multinational M&A transactions and joint ventures. His practice also focuses on German insolvency law — including distressed mergers and acquisitions — and real estate matters.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Advised The John Buck Company on its acquisition of the Sony Center Berlin (together with Morgan Stanley and Corpus Sireo), the formation of corresponding joint ventures and the subsequent restructuring of the investment.
  • Acted for Bank Forum / Yuruchev Family in connection with the sale of the Ukrainian Bank Forum to German Commerzbank.
  • Assisted a European shopping center investor/developer in the formation of joint ventures with a US partner relating to the investment in, and development of, shopping centers in Eastern Europe.
  • Advised the city of Hamburg on the privatization of its hospitals.
  • Acted for Fresenius in connection with the acquisition of Helios Kliniken.
  • Advised One Equity Partners on the acquisition of Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft (HDW) from TUI and the (subsequently insolvent) Babcock Borsig.
