This year marks the 17th COP and 7th CMP, which will take place in Durban, South Africa from 28 November to 9 December 2011.

The Act is the government's response to the issues arising from the Orica industrial complex incident at Kooragang Island near Newcastle and other recent incidents involving major hazardous facilities. The Act has been passed but has not yet come into force. It will do so on a day appointed by proclamation.

The Legislative Package provides a mechanism to put a price on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scheme) in order to help Australia meet its unconditional pollution reduction target of 5% below 2000 levels by 2020. If the Legislative Package is passed, the Scheme will commence on 1 July 2012 with an initial three year fixed price period that will transition to a flexible price cap and trade emissions trading scheme on 1 July 2015.
