European Union/WTO Law in Switzerland

We advise clients on EU rules and their impact on Swiss law to help them comply with requirements and qualify for benefits under the EU legal system. We have substantive EU experience in Zurich, with several practitioners focusing on EU law and advising clients on bilateral treaties between Switzerland and the EU. We also provide trade law and compliance advice in relation to exports and imports, sanctions and embargoes, among others.

Our WTO practice group offers clients broad global resources necessary to take advantage of existing WTO rules as well as potential opportunities in multilateral trade. Our team consists of a core of practitioners experienced in virtually every aspect of international trade policy and regulation.

We also have substantial experience in Geneva, where the WTO headquarters is located and where most WTO negotiation and dispute settlement activities take place. Our team plays a strategic role as it has direct access to the Permanent Missions of WTO Members, and can offer clients on-site assistance on WTO matters, including counseling, advocacy during negotiation and representation in dispute settlement.

Establishing effective compliance programs for global companies has never been more important. Read our analysis of the US Government’s highly anticipated FCPA Resource Guide for an overview of its most important provisions.
Joint ventures between competitors may provide a basis for public bidding exclusion, as shown by two recent decisions of the Higher State Court of Dusseldorf. We provide an overview of the court’s rulings and outline the consequences companies face for forming bidding consortia with competitors.
The UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO) is taking on a more aggressive stance in targeting fraud, bribery and corruption. We examine the criticisms the agency received in the past, the improvements to the system — including updates on enforcement of the UK Bribery Act — and their implications on multinational compliance programs.
