Stefan Bessman is the chairman of the European Insurance/Reinsurance Practice Group Steering Committee. He regularly advises on matters involving dispute resolution and intellectual property law. Mr. Bessman is a contributor to the Swedish edition of Karnov, as well as to the International Arbitration Checklist.

Practice Focus

Mr. Bessman is highly experienced in international arbitration, litigation, insurance litigation, non-contentious insurance advice and insolvency matters. He regularly works on IP enforcement and anti-piracy and frequently represents clients before all major city courts in Sweden, courts of appeal and the Supreme Court. Mr. Bessman is often engaged in institutional arbitration proceedings, and is knowledgeable in procedural rules, including Swedish and foreign legislation. He arbitrates in commercial disputes, and is seasoned in dispute resolution in the fields of banking, finance and reinsurance. Mr. Bessman has also been involved in several disputes relating to cross-border investment and joint venture projects.

Representative Legal Matters

• Represented more than 40 Swiss, German and Scandinavian reinsurers against the bankruptcy estate of a Swedish credit & guarantee insurer, in an arbitration relating to reinsurance of financial guarantees for real estate and finance companies.
• Represented a Finnish reinsurer against a Swedish insurer and a Luxembourg bank, in litigation relating to financial guarantees for real estate acquisition.
• Represented a German construction company against a Ukrainian State Entity in arbitration relating to an energy production project.
• Represented a Norwegian insurer against a Swedish insurer in a dispute over the quality of a portfolio of policies purchased by the Norwegian company.
• Represented a Finnish insurer against a Swedish insurer in litigation relating to co-insurance of elevator accidents in the US.
• Represented a UK life insurer in litigation relating to recovery of overpayments to pension insurance beneficiaries.
