Paul Stibbard is joint head of the Wealth Management Department in the London office and is also on the Firm's Global Wealth Management Steering Committee. He has extensive experience in a wide range of cross-border tax and trust related matters. He is listed as one of the top six leading practitioners in London in Trusts and Personal Tax by Chambers UK and Chambers Global. He was also awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 by Citywealth. Paul is a frequent speaker at external conferences, and he regularly contributes to professional journals. He serves as editor of the international edition of the Firm’s Private Banking Newsletter, and is a member of STEP’s International Committee and an academician of the International Academy of Estate and Tax Law.

Practice Focus

Paul advises a broad range of clients — including individuals and trustees — on complex cross-border trust and tax related issues, with an emphasis on Shari’a law. He also advises on wealth succession offshore tax structures for families from civil and Shari’a law jurisdictions. Paul has prepared Shari’a law compliant trusts for several of the top international banks and financial institutions.

  • Preparing Shari'a compliant trust precedents for major international banks, covering compliance both with Shari'a inheritance and investment laws.
  • Advising on the establishment of a Shari'a compliant charitable trust with initial settled funds in excess of USD100 million.
  • Advising in relation to a complex, back tax cross border enquiries and negotiating a settlement with the UK Revenue.
  • Advising trustees on their potential exposure to trust fund investment losses.
  • Advising on division of USD2 billion trust fund leading to its partition into separate settlements.

Paul is the author of a chapter on Offshore Financial Centres in Tolley's Tax Havens. He is the editor of the international edition of the Baker & McKenzie Private Banking Newsletter.

Paul speaks frequently at external conferences and contributes to a number of professional journals; he has recently spoken at the International Academy of Trusts & Estate Law Conference 2009 in Colombia, the Transcontinental Trusts Conference 2009 in Geneva and the IBA Annual Conference 2009 in Madrid. He has recently written articles for Trust & Trustees on Islamic succession issues and Offshore Investment on Trustee investment losses. He has been quoted in both the Financial Times and Wall Street Journal (Europe) on matters of topical interest.

He has lectured extensively on family succession issues and Shari'a compliant trusts for Middle Eastern families in Bahrain, Dubai, London, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Singapore. Paul has participated in a series of interviews for Xalt.tv on trust, tax and Shari'a law related issues.
