With the opening of the Budapest office in 1987, Baker & McKenzie became the first Western law firm to establish a representative office in Central and Eastern Europe. Hungary's large enterprises face fines up to HUF11 million for not auditing energy use within 2016. According to a 2015 law, businesses must register with the national energy regulator, report consumption annually and audit every four years. Non-registration risks a fine up to HUF1 million, with a further HUF10 million for failure to audit.
