Promoting synergy and sustainability

Although there are still uncertainties about future global economic dynamics following last year's dramatic events in the financial markets, there is evidence that the world is facing an unprecedented economic restructuring, moving towards more sustainably managed, less carbon and energy-intensive production and consumption patterns.

The so-called greening of the economy is an imperative to face the challenges posed by climate change, population growth, energy security and the unsustainable use of natural resources. In this context, there are also significant opportunities emerging from the mutual recognition of socio-economic synergies between countries which have not been traditional partners in the global trading and finance markets. That is the case of Australia and Brazil, which together host an immense natural resource reserve and are the most dynamic economies in the Southern Hemisphere. Both countries' responses to the current economic uncertainties have already positioned them well in the international investment arena.

Recognizing the immense potential of such synergies between Australia and Brazil, Baker & McKenzie, in partnership with the Australia-Brazil Chamber of Commerce (ABCC), held a full-day conference on 8 September 2009 aimed at exploring some of the business opportunities in the sustainable management, green investment and environmental markets from the perspectives of government and private sector. The conference consisted of five panel sessions with approximately 25 panelists in total, covering the synergies between Australia and Brazil in the areas of mining, oil and gas, and natural resources; sustainable agriculture; sustainable forestry and REDD; sustainable investment and carbon financing; and renewable energy. There were approximately 75 delegates over the course of the day, including guest speaker, His Excellency Ambassador Fernando de Mello Barreto, the Brazilian Ambassador to Australia.

Australian and Brazilian companies, project developers and financial institutions operating in both countries shared their sustainable development policies, technology developments, business experiences and prospecting investments, pointing out the major opportunities for further enhancement of bilateral relations between Brazil and Australia. Representatives from academia and State and Federal governments also presented research portfolios and ongoing collaborations at the Federal and State levels.

Representatives from mining, oil and gas, as well as natural resources companies and research centers discussed best business practices with respect to environmental and social requirements for licensing of major projects, and presented case studies and portfolios of projects to mitigate carbon emissions. The panelists also discussed the technical and financial challenges and opportunities regarding R&D of Carbon Capture and Storage (CSS) technology, including possible collaboration between companies and research centers.

Although recognizing some challenges in operating across different business and legal environments, the overall message from the participants underpinned the important synergies between the two countries and the ongoing positive shift in their trade relations in the international natural resources and green investment spaces — moving from competitors to partners.
